Research Management Software for One Study at a Time

Most research is lost between tools: the question lives in a document, the literature in a reference manager, the methodology in an email to a supervisor and the analysis in a spreadsheet. Research Notebook is research management software that keeps the whole study in one place — a structured notebook, a literature library, an evidence matrix, tasks and analysis pages that follow the research lifecycle from first question to final write-up.

What the software manages

Plan the study, not just the tasks

Guided pages take you through the problem statement, purpose, research questions, hypotheses where relevant, scope and significance, so your design decisions are written down instead of remembered. The recommended path adapts to your approach and design, and every page stays available when you need it.

Keep the literature in one library

Store sources with structured citation metadata — authors, year, container, volume, pages, DOI and other identifiers — alongside reading status, tags and notes. Look a reference up by DOI, import RIS or BibTeX files, and export the same formats back out.

Reconcile duplicates before they spread

Imports are checked against your library and against the rest of the same file. Records that share a DOI or other strong identifier are flagged as exact duplicates, close bibliographic matches as possible ones, and nothing is discarded without your decision.

Compare sources in an evidence matrix

Line up each source against your research questions, themes, methods and key findings, so synthesis becomes a table you can defend rather than a paragraph you improvise.

Document methodology and ethics properly

Dedicated pages cover research approach, design, sampling, instruments, procedure, ethics and limitations — the sections a supervisor or reviewer will ask for.

Track data, analysis and findings

Record collection, cleaning, coding and analysis steps alongside the findings they produced, so the chain from raw data to conclusion stays auditable.

Share a controlled snapshot with a supervisor

On Researcher and Researcher Pro, create an expiring, de-identified, read-only review snapshot of the pages and sources you choose, optionally allow controlled comments on it, and generate a supervisor review packet. A reviewer never gets an account, ownership or editing access.

Stay on top of the work itself

Tasks with due dates and priorities, an activity log, version history and a project review that flags the pages you have left empty.

Who it is built for

  • Graduate students running a dissertation or thesis
  • Early-career researchers managing a single funded study
  • Independent scholars who need structure without a lab's tooling

It is designed around an individual researcher: a project is private to your account until you deliberately invite someone, and there is no simultaneous co-authoring. What paid plans do offer is deliberate, controlled review: an expiring, de-identified, read-only snapshot of the pages and sources you choose, optional controlled comments on it, and a supervisor review packet — without giving anyone ownership of or editing access to your notebook. Simultaneous co-authoring, shared laboratory workspaces and institutional workspace administration are not available — planned for future development based on demonstrated interest.

What it costs

The Free plan gives you 2 active projects, 25 literature sources per project and 100 MB of file storage. Researcher is $12 per month or $120 per year and lifts the project and source caps, adds the evidence matrix, advanced methodology, data and analysis tools, advanced exports and version history, with 5 GB of storage. Researcher Pro is $20 per month or $200 per year and adds the AI research assistant with 20 GB of storage.

How your material is handled

Projects are private to your account and access is enforced in the database, not just in the interface. The AI assistant on Researcher Pro sends the context you select through the Lovable AI gateway to Google Gemini; operational records of each request are kept, and full request and response content may be retained according to the logging configuration in force. We publish exactly what leaves your account rather than promising more than we can verify.
