Terms of use
Effective September 5, 2026. Written in plain language on purpose.
Research Notebook is operated by Perspectives Plus Research LLC, a Texas limited liability company.
Research Notebook is a private workspace for planning, documenting and writing research. These terms describe what we provide, what we ask of you, and what happens if either of us wants to stop.
1. The service
Research Notebook gives you structured notebook pages, a literature library, tasks, an evidence matrix, file storage and — on some plans — an AI research assistant. Features available to you depend on the plan you are on. We may add, change or retire features, and we will not remove a paid feature you are actively relying on without notice.
2. Your account
You need an account to use the service, and you are responsible for keeping your credentials safe. One account is intended for one researcher. Do not share sign-in details with others, and tell us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed by someone else.
You must be at least 16 years old, or the age of digital consent where you live.
3. Your content stays yours
Everything you write — notes, sources, records, drafts and uploaded files — remains your intellectual property. You grant us only the narrow permission needed to store, back up, transmit and display that content back to you so the service can work. We do not sell your content, publish it, or use it to train machine learning models.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- upload content you have no legal right to store or share;
- store identifiable, restricted, ePHI/HIPAA-regulated data, or education records requiring institutional approval — use an institution-approved system and follow your IRB or data-management plan for that material;
- attempt to access another user's account, data or infrastructure;
- resell, scrape or systematically extract the service;
- use the AI assistant to produce work you then present as unaided.
Serious or repeated breaches may lead to suspension. Where we can, we will contact you first and give you a chance to export your work.
5. Plans, billing and refunds
Paid plans are billed monthly or annually in advance through our payment processor. Prices are shown in US dollars and exclude any tax that applies where you live; applicable tax is calculated at checkout.
Upgrades take effect immediately and are pro-rated. Downgrades and cancellations take effect at the end of the period you have already paid for — we do not cut access short. After that, the account returns to the Free plan and keeps read access to everything you have written.
If you cancel within 14 days of a first paid subscription and have not meaningfully used the paid features, contact us and we will refund that payment. Otherwise we do not refund part-used periods.
6. AI features
The AI research assistant produces suggestions, not scholarship. Output can be wrong, incomplete or misleading, and it may invent citations. You are responsible for verifying anything you carry into your own work, and for complying with the AI policy of your institution, funder or publisher. See our research data statement for exactly what is sent to the model.
7. Availability
We work hard to keep the service running, but we do not promise uninterrupted availability. Maintenance, provider outages and events outside our control can cause downtime. Keep your own backups of work you cannot afford to lose — you can export a full copy of your account at any time from Settings.
8. Ending the agreement
You can cancel your subscription or delete your account at any time from Settings. Deleting the account permanently removes your projects, notes, sources, records and files and cancels any active subscription. That action cannot be undone.
9. Liability
The service is provided as-is. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose. We are not liable for lost research, lost funding, or indirect or consequential loss.
10. Governing law and disputes
The service is operated by Perspectives Plus Research LLC, a Texas limited liability company, registered at 706 London Town Lane, McKinney, TX 75071, USA. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that cannot be resolved between us will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Collin County, Texas, and both of us consent to that jurisdiction.
11. Changes and contact
If we change these terms materially, we will tell you by email or in the app before the change takes effect. Questions go to share@perspectivesplus.org.
